Monday Grab Bag: Same bag taste, just with less filling

Happy pre-Memorial Day week, everyone!  Try not to be distracted by the start of grilling season as the hours tick by to the upcoming 3-day weekend.  The bag today will touch on recruiting news, a Bulls loss, the White Sox surging to mediocrity, and Boulder softball.  Such is life over the summer.

Buffs recruiting news - Unfortunately for me, recruiting news is all that's coming out of Buff-land these days.  I'm never going to breathlessly report on which 17 year-old is going to spend an unofficial visit on Boulder, but I will pass along information about kids who may actually end up coming here... like Austin Vincent who recently committed to play with CU this fall.  The 6-1 WR from DeSoto High in Texas was a late qualifier with some injury bagage, yet still racked up an impressive offer list that included  Iowa, Arkansas, Arizona, and Utah.  Assuming his paperwork comes through OK (always an issue), he should be available to compete for playing time this fall (I'd put my money on a redshirt, but you never know...).  Looks like the Texas connections of WR coach Bobby Kennedy are paying dividends.  Welcome aboard, Vincent!

Additionally, transfer Logan Gray, who is bailing on Georgia for his final year of eligibility, has been accepted into a grad program at CU and will be available for WR/PR duty this fall.  Welcome aboard, Logan!  WR depth is quickly becoming a non-issue.

Bulls lose again - My Bulls took it on the chin last night in a 96-85 loss on South Beach.  (Bosh was brilliant, yadda yadda.)  The Bulls offense has looked awful the past two games, and as a result the team is down 2-1 in the series.  All that's needed is a win Tuesday night to shift momentum, but it's going to take some changes.  To me, it comes down to playing shooters more in order to spread the court.  Every time the Bulls started dribble-drive in the second half Sunday night the Heat were able to collapse with impunity as Ronnie Brewer isn't a threat to make an outside jumper.  Not for nothing, but it's hard to get to the hoop when you've got three defenders in your face every time you move towards the basket.  Also Carlos Boozer needs to sack up.
Bosh lit it up, but it was the offense that has killed the Bulls in games 2 and 3.  From: the trib

Sox are no longer "worse than ebola" - The rumors that the Sox offense was the driving force behind predictions of the apocalypse were completely untrue.  Never-the-less, watching that schlock night-in, night-out was beginning to make my head feel funny.  Luckily for me, the offense is no longer comparable to a contagious disease, and I'm upgrading the teams performance from "worse than ebola" to "still awful, just will no longer make you wish for death."  They may even crack "only mildly irritating" if they keep this up.
High-fives are back in style on the south side.  From: the trib

Over the past 2 weeks my Sox have slowly, but surely, inched their way back toward respectability, and now the club is only 4 games away from .500.  That it took a 11-4 run over the past 15 games to get to this point only underscores how awful the team was over the first 33.  The offense may finally be rounding into form as they've scored at least 8 runs in 3 of the last 4 games.  Considering the pitching staff is still in "can't give up anything or I'm taking the loss mode," that can only mean good things.  Sure, the team is still 9 games back of the Indians, but it isn't even Memorial Day yet.  I can worry about that problem next week.

Boulder Softball - Speaking of things only I care about, the City of Boulder's adult softball league was featured in the Camera today.  Not only do I play (go Rangers!), but I also ump in the league, and love it to death.  Good to see everyone get a little publicity for our little hobby.

Happy Monday!
